Mr Sutton is a core member of the Advanced Pelvic Malignancy, Peritoneal Tumour Service and Neuroendocrine MDTs at The Christie. He specialises in the management of colorectal cancer, performing open and minimally invasive surgery for primary, advanced and recurrent cancer, including pelvic exenteration and sacrectomy. Mr Sutton also performs cytoreductive surgery with heated intra-peritoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) for appendix tumours and colorectal peritoneal metastases, and surgery for neuroendocrine tumours. He is a JAG accredited endoscopist and performs diagnostic and therapeutic colonoscopy.

Professional biography

Mr Sutton graduated from the University of Nottingham in 2006, followed by postgraduate training in Nottingham, Manchester and Liverpool. During his training, he was awarded a Clinical Research Training Fellowship by Cancer Research UK and undertook a PhD to explore methods of improving treatment response to chemotherapy and radiotherapy in colorectal cancer. For this work he was awarded both the John of Arderne medal from the Royal Society of Medicine, and the Arris and Gale medal from the Royal College of Surgeons of England.

After completion of his surgical training, Mr Sutton undertook further fellowship training at The Christie. He completed both the European Society of Peritoneal Surface Oncology fellowship and the European Board Surgical Qualification in Surgical Oncology, for which he won the prize for the best examination performance. Following this, Mr Sutton undertook a further year’s training at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney – the world’s most experienced unit for the management of advanced pelvic malignancy.

Mr Sutton returned to The Christie in 2021 as a consultant surgeon. He specialises in the management of locally advanced and recurrent rectal cancer, peritoneal surface malignancy (including cytoreductive surgery and HIPEC), appendix and neuroendocrine tumours.

Research Interest

Mr Sutton’s research interests are in predicting and modifying response to adjuvant therapy in colorectal cancer, and more recently in improving outcomes for patients with locally advanced and recurrent rectal cancer. He has published over 80 peer-reviewed papers and is an editor for The BJS (formerly The British Journal of Surgery).

Mr Sutton is an Honorary Senior Lecturer in the Division of Cancer Sciences at The University of Manchester undertaking clinical, quality of life and genomic research into locally recurrent rectal cancer.

Educational Interests

Mr Sutton was the Vice President of the Association of Surgeons in Training (2016-2018) and remains committed to both undergraduate and postgraduate surgical education. He completed a Masters in Medical Education exploring ways in which decision making is taught to surgeons. Mr Sutton is a Member of the Faculty of Surgical Trainers of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, a GMC approved trainer, and a JAG approved colonoscopy trainer.
