Dr Barriuso is an active member of the European Society of Medical Oncology (ESMO), being a Faculty Member for the Gastro-Intestinal Tumours Scientific Committee. He is part of the Executive Board of the Spanish Task Force for Neuroendocrine Tumours (GETNE). He is heavily involved in European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) Gastrointestinal Cancer Group, participating in the Adolescent and Young Adults and the Early Phase / SPECTA task forces.

Professional biography

Dr Jorge Barriuso completed his residency program in medical oncology at Hospital Universitario La Paz (Madrid, Spain) in 2005. He obtained a “Rio Hortega” junior research contract and presented his PhD in May 2007. Between 2007-2008, he completed a Clinical Research Fellow at the Royal Marsden Hospital Drug Development Unit.

He moved to Manchester in 2013 with the aim of building new translational research in gastro-intestinal malignancies and neuroendocrine tumours. He has since been involved in translational (lab-based) research and clinical research at The Christie NHS Foundation and The University of Manchester.

Dr Barriuso has completed a Master’s Degree in Statistics for Health Sciences and a second one in Health Economics and Pharmaco-economics.

During his career, Dr Barriuso has been awarded  several grants and fellowships from international and national organizations, such as, the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC), the European Neuroendocrine Tumour Society (ENETS), the UK and Ireland Neuroendocrine Tumour Society (UKINETS), the Spanish Society of Medical Oncology (SEOM) and the prestigious Marie-Curie Intra-European fellowship from the European Research Council (ERC).

Research Interest

Dr Barriuso's main interest is to understand the process of metastasis of gastrointestinal and neuroendocrine tumours to develop new treatment strategies in these malignancies. He is also interested in health economics of cancer treatments and biostatistics.

Educational Interests

Dr Barriuso has a strong interest in medical education, supervising medical students and junior doctors.
