At The Christie, there is a group of clinical and non-clinical staff who are committed to work on oncology projects that support improving cancer outcomes in lower and middle-income countries (LMIC).
These projects align with the aims of the World Health Organisation and the Union of International Cancer Control – to tackle inequalities in cancer care by increasing capacity and knowledge of the healthcare workforce.
They also strengthen cultural intelligence and awareness, enabling staff to be even more responsive to the needs of our diverse local patient population.
Led by Alison Sanneh from the School of Oncology, the group has successfully secured external grant funding from agencies such as NHS England (Global Health Partnerships) and the Tropical Health and Education Trust (THET) to support educational initiatives in East Africa.
In 2023, The Christie Charity loaned The Christie International funding to further establish a Global Cancer Faculty, headed up by Professor Richard Cowan, which will help secure increased grant funding to enable similar projects to be undertaken in the future.
