The Christie is an internationally-leading comprehensive cancer centre.

Everything we do is focused on putting our patients first. And to support this, we have a number of accreditations from world-leading bodies and organisations. You can see some of our accreditations below.

Accreditations as an organisation

UICC - Union for International Cancer Control

The Christie is a member of the UICC which unites and supports the cancer community in more than 160 countries across the world.

OECI - Organisation of European Cancer Institutes

In December 2018, The OECI re-accredited The Christie as a comprehensive cancer centre. This shows we meet the international standards for cancer care.

Cancer Research UK Manchester Centre – Major Centre

The University of Manchester, Cancer Research UK and The Christie NHS Foundation Trust established The Manchester Cancer Research Centre (MCRC) in 2006. In 2015, we opened a new building for MCRC researchers and this became a major centre for cancer research.

Manchester Biomedical Research Centre (BRC)

As part of our partnership with Health Innovation Manchester, the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) has invested £28.5m in the NIHR Manchester Biomedical Research Centre (BRC). This is hosted by Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust and The University of Manchester, in partnership with The Christie NHS Foundation Trust and Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust.

European Neuroendocrine Tumor Society (ENETS) centre of excellence

The European Neuroendocrine Tumor Society (ENETS) accredits centres of excellence across Europe that treat patients with neuroendocrine tumours. We were awarded ENETS centre of excellence status in March 2011 and again in 2014. In March 2019, we were fully re-accredited for a further five years.

Radiotherapy accreditations

Proton beam therapy centre

The Christie is the first NHS high-energy proton beam therapy (PBT) centre in the UK as part of a £250m programme for a national PBT service.

A second PBT centre has also opened at University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

MR-linac treatment

The Christie is part of the Elekta MR-linac consortium. This means we’re one of the world’s first cancer centres to have acquired a magnetic resonance linear accelerator (MR-linac).

Cancer Research UK Lung Cancer Centre of Excellence

We’re a partner of The Cancer Research UK Lung Cancer Centre of Excellence at Manchester and University College London (UCL). Established in 2014, the centre combines expertise in basic, translational and clinical research.

Chemotherapy accreditations

CAR T-cell therapy treatment

We were pleased to be one of the centres chosen by NHS England to deliver the ground-breaking chimeric antigen receptor T-cell (CAR T-cell) therapy for young adults and adults. This involves reprogramming the patient’s own immune system cells to target their cancer.

National Institute for Health Research CRUK Christie Clinical Research Facility

The cancer research facility at The Christie is one of four specialist units in Manchester for experimental cancer research. This means we carry out many innovative early-phase trials and other leading research projects.

Surgery accreditations

Accredited robotic surgery training centre

In March 2018, staff members at The Christie were pleased to achieve accredited training centre status for robotic surgery in urology and gynaecology. This means The Christie helps to train other consultants from around the UK to be able to use the robotic technology.

Peritoneal Surface Oncology Group International (PSOGI)

The colorectal and peritoneal oncology centre at The Christie is a member of the Peritoneal Surface Oncology Group International (PSOGI). PSOGI works to improve the treatment and survival of peritoneal cancer patients by educating patients and training physicians.

European Society of Peritoneal Surface Oncology (ESPSO) training centre

The colorectal and peritoneal oncology centre at The Christie is a training centre recognised by the European Society of Surface Oncology (ESSO). ESSO aims to develop the science and practice of surgical oncology to benefit of cancer patients.

Movember Centre of Excellence

The Belfast-Manchester Movember Centre of Excellence opened in 2014, aiming to bring together expert prostate cancer researchers and clinicians. Several of The Christie’s clinicians are part of this, helping to transform prostate cancer research in the UK.

European Society of Gynaecological Oncology (ESGO) Certification for Advanced Ovarian Cancer Surgery

The gynaecological oncology surgery department at The Christie was recognised by the European Society of Gynaecological Oncology (ESGO) as an ESGO certified centre in ovarian cancer surgery in 2020. ESGO is a leading European organisation with more than 2,500 professionals involved in treatment, care and research of gynaecologic cancers.

Diagnostics accreditations

Cancer Research UK Cancer Imaging Centre

The Cancer Research UK (CRUK) and Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) Cancer Imaging Centre in Cambridge and Manchester is based at Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge and The Christie. It is dedicated to developing new methods to detect and treat cancer.

North West Genomics Partnership

The North West Genomics Partnership is hosted by Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust, and The Christie is one of the partners in this collaborative hub of health science. In October 2018, NHS England chose the partnership as one of seven genomics laboratories across the country.
