Clinical oncology

These tumours may be cancerous or non-cancerous. Clinical oncologists are experts in providing radiotherapy and systemic treatments.

Depending on each patient’s diagnosis and individual circumstances, these treatments can be used to cure the disease, control it or to help to improve the patient’s symptoms. Clinical oncologists work closely with surgeons, medical oncologists, other specialist doctors and allied health professionals such as radiographers and physiotherapists.

Systemic treatments

Systemic treatments are drug therapies that work throughout the whole of the body. They can be given as an injection, infusion, or oral medication.

Radiotherapy treatments

Radiotherapy uses high energy rays to kill cancer cells. Different radiotherapy techniques are useful for different types of tumours. At The Christie, we provide a range of different types of radiotherapy.

Proton beam therapy

The Christie is home to the first NHS centre in the UK to offer high-energy proton beam therapy (PBT).
