Professional biography
Miss Clifford graduated from The University of Liverpool Medical School in 2011 before completing her postgraduate training across the Mersey Deanery. In 2017, she took time out of full-time training in order to complete a PhD investigating the role of biomarkers in improving response to radiotherapy of locally advanced rectal cancer.
After successfully obtaining her FRCS and completing her training, she commenced a further year of fellowship at The Christie in Peritoneal and Advanced Colorectal Malignancy. This year supported her transition and appointment as a Consultant at the Trust.
Miss Clifford undertakes surgery for advanced colorectal and appendix malignancy, peritoneal disease and as a member of the anal cancer MDT also manages early AIN and recurrent anal cancer.
Research Interest
Miss Clifford has always had a passion for research. During her training, she completed a PhD in surgical oncology focusing upon the sphingolipid pathway as a possible target for improving response to radiotherapy for locally advanced rectal cancer. During this time, she was the Chief Investigator for a national study focusing upon the variation in management of rectal cancer during the COVID-19 pandemic and worked upon several steering committees for collaborative national studies. Her ongoing interests and projects focus upon advanced cancer and the role of radiotherapy.
Educational Interests
Miss Clifford has always had a keen interest in medical education from an undergraduate level. She teaches regularly at The University of Liverpool and on both Christie and external Royal College of Surgeons courses. She spent time during her training in Sri Lanka with a team from The Royal College of Surgeons delivering and establishing surgical skills courses in Jaffna. Miss Clifford is also a JAG-approved endoscopy trainer.
