Wendy Mannion, Oak Road receptionist

Wendy Mannion is the winner of The Christie’s You Made a Difference Award for June 2026.

The following comments were made about Wendy in the June nominations. Judges picked her out as a very deserving winner and said that the comments made about her showed how she represents The Christie values and behaviours.

“As a relative of a patient of the hospital and several others after having a conversation with others who regularly attend, we feel it is important to highlight the exceptional impact Wendy has made, despite not having been in post for a long time. She is truly an asset to the hospital.

“Wendy consistently greets everyone with a warm smile and a friendly welcome and using our names as if she has always known us. She goes above and beyond in supporting patients, always demonstrating empathy, kindness, and compassion. She never raises her voice or makes anyone feel like a burden, calming those around us who may be agitated, and she has a wonderful ability to lift people’s spirits – often making us laugh and smile during what can be difficult visits.

“Her support includes assisting patients with The Christie app, escorting patients upstairs when needed, including helping a patient whose sister was unable to manage the wheelchair during one of our visits on her way home. She also takes the time to listen to and talk through queries or complaints with patience and understanding, and goes out of her way to resolve issues, particularly when there have been delays with clinic matters such as unsigned prescriptions.

“Wendy at times works alone on reception, with others stepping in and out, yet she continues to radiate positivity and professionalism. This makes a significant difference to the patient experience, especially in such a busy environment. Her compassion and dedication do not go unnoticed—not just by us, but by many others in the waiting area.

“For example, on Tuesday 19 May, when the blood machines were not working as they should, several of us were waiting for results before treatment. Wendy supported us throughout, providing regular updates and even staying beyond her time to ensure we were either seen or contacted with updates.

She represents the very best of patient care, always listening to our concerns and taking the time to engage with us. We sincerely hope she receives the recognition she truly deserves.

John, patient’s relative

“Wendy joined our team in October 2025 and has quickly become a valued and much-appreciated member of the department. She is focused, dedicated, and consistently goes above and beyond to help both patients and colleagues. Her positive attitude and willingness to support others truly reflect the values of our organisation.

“Wendy always greets patients with a warm smile, making them feel welcome and comfortable from the moment they arrive. This is especially important for patients visiting The Christie for the first time, as it can be an incredibly nerve-racking experience. Wendy’s friendly, polite, and professional manner helps to put patients at ease and creates a positive first impression of our service.

“Her compassion, professionalism, and commitment to delivering an excellent patient experience make her thoroughly deserving of recognition. Wendy is a great asset to our team, and this award would be a fitting acknowledgement of her hard work and dedication.

“Wendy loves to spend time with her family and she also loves her spa weekends.”
