Safeguarding is about ensuring a person’s health, wellbeing, and human rights are protected, empowering them to live free from harm, abuse, and neglect.

At The Christie NHS Foundation Trust, we work hard to ensure that all patients are cared for in a safe, secure and caring environment; that all services have safeguarding at their core, and that staff are supported and trained appropriately to manage safeguarding issues where they arise – safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility.

Our dedicated safeguarding team offers expert advice, training, and support on a wide range of issues, including:

  • Abuse and/or neglect
  • Domestic abuse and sexual violence
  • The Prevent programme – a national initiative to prevent terrorism and radicalisation
  • Mental capacity and Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards (DoLS)
  • Homelessness
  • Promoting a ‘Think Family’ approach – a holistic view where family members' needs, health, and behaviours are supported together
  • Supervision for staff and volunteers
  • Supporting those with additional needs who may require reasonable adjustments

The team operates across all areas and at every site within The Christie NHS Foundation Trust.

We deliver evidence-based training to ensure staff and volunteers can confidently identify and respond to safeguarding concerns. Our work is guided by key national and local policies and statutory frameworks, including Working Together to Safeguard Children (2023), The Care Act (2014), and The Mental Capacity Act (2005).

Collaboration is central to our approach. We work closely with Manchester Safeguarding Partnership to safeguard vulnerable children, young people, and adults.

When safeguarding concerns arise, we share relevant information with partner agencies in a lawful, proportionate, and appropriate manner, in line with data-sharing legislation.

The safeguarding team provides advice and support from 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, (excluding bank holidays). You can contact the safeguarding team by email at The-christie.safeguarding@nhs.net
