Advice regarding the Sir Anthony Mamo Oncology Centre linear accelerator replacement programme.
In 2025, a team of advisors from The Christie visited the Sir Anthony Mamo Oncology Centre (SAMOC), part of the MATER DEI Hospital in Malta, to provide independent advice in relation to their linear accelerator (linac) replacement programme.
SAMOC operates the only radiotherapy service on the islands of Malta and their ambition is to deliver state-of-the-art personalised treatments, ensuring the best possible outcomes for their patients. Their linac replacement programme will also ensure that the future service has the capacity and capability to meet future patient demand.
Professor Julia Handley (Radiotherapy Physics), Rachael Edwards (Radiotherapy) and Kris Newton (Digital Services) and Jonathan Martin (Head of Christie International) undertook a site visit to observe the current service configuration and to meet with members of SAMOC’s radiotherapy staff to fully understand their clinical vision and technical requirements for their future service.

The team used their current experience and expertise to produce an independent report of their findings regarding the linac replacement programme, which could be used by the hospital to inform discussions with the Ministry for Health and Active Ageing.
