Supporting patient wellbeing and additional services at The Christie

Your support can help treat the body, mind and spirit of cancer patients.

Thanks to generous Christie Charity supporters, we’re able to help fund so many amazing projects at The Christie hospital. These include world-leading cancer care or pioneering research, or helping to pursue bold ambitions for the future, like building a new scanning centre.

But there are so many more ways your kindness helps to change cancer patients’ lives. For example, supporters like you helped us create and now tend to The Christie hospital garden. It’s a beautiful, peaceful retreat where patients and their families can spend precious time together.

Supporters also help to fund our drop-in art classes, where patients can escape the worry of treatment for a short while.

That’s not all. Christie Charity supporters also help to provide free wig services that help patients retain their identity and dignity. And they also make complementary therapies like acupuncture available, and psychological support, that can bring light to the darkest of days.

Donate today to give towards support services at The Christie and help improve patient wellbeing.

Here are just some of the holistic patient services at The Christie that your support is helping to fund:

  • The art room at The Christie helps many patients cope with the emotional effects of cancer. It is somewhere they can escape and be with others who understand what they are going through, helping them to feel normal again. This is why the art room service at The Christie is so important. And it's completely, 100% funded by our fantastic supporters.

Surgical Oncology Academy

  • The Academy of Surgical Oncology at The Christie will create a space for multi-disciplinary research. This will allow scientists and clinicians to work together in a truly collaborative way.
  • It will enable The Christie to carry out a ground-breaking combination of surgical and clinical treatment, deliver pioneering research into cancer cells and identify more targeted treatments.
  • Patients will directly benefit from leading scientists and health care professionals delivering fresh insights into cancer treatments.

Pet therapy

  • Funded by Christie Charity supporters, the therapy dog service brings specially trained therapy dogs into the hospital to help reduce anxiety, provide comfort and make treatment less overwhelming for young patients and families. Delivered by Health Play Specialists and trained handlers, the sessions have become a much-loved part of the patient experience. Supporter funding is now helping the service expand so even more young people can benefit.

The Cancer Information Centre

  • The Cancer Information Centre offers guidance, reassurance and personalised support to help people navigate the challenges brought by a cancer diagnosis and treatment.
  • Funded by Christie Charity supporters, The Christie’s Cancer Information Centre offers patients and families a welcoming space to access clear information, emotional support and guidance throughout their cancer journey. The team helps people understand a diagnosis and access financial, emotional and practical support, playing an important role in ensuring nobody faces cancer alone.
Holistic care icon

Holistic care

  • We fund wellbeing services for patients that provide more than just cancer treatment. Complementary therapy and psycho-oncology help patients manage the physical and emotional effects of cancer and its treatment, both during their cancer journey and after.
  • The complementary health and wellbeing service at The Christie can be an integral part of a patient’s cancer journey. Complementary therapies can help patients with the stress of cancer treatment, manage treatment side effects such as sickness and deal with longer-term issues. Funded entirely by charitable donations, the service supports patients at Christie centres in Withington, Oldham, Salford and Macclesfield.
  • The psycho-oncology service provides proactive, personalised psychological care from the moment they get a diagnosis. It helps patients manage the emotional impact of cancer and supports them through their treatment and any side effects. The team also supports people experiencing psychological effects after treatment, managing the long-term consequences of cancer therapies or living with pre-existing mental health conditions. Approximately 900 patients per year are supported by this service, improving emotional wellbeing and overall cancer outcomes.

  • The education centre at The Christie is a highly regarded venue for national and international study days and conferences, offering a high standard of service and state-of-the-art facilities.
  • By funding staff education, The Christie Charity helps colleagues develop their knowledge and skills, supporting better care and outcomes for patients.
