The Christie Charity exists solely to support the work of The Christie NHS Foundation Trust and its patients, providing enhanced services over and above what the NHS funds.
This Impact Report is our opportunity to thank you, our supporters, and show you the very real impact of your backing, without which this work would not be possible.
In sharing some of the highlights from the past year, we would like to recognise the vital role our fundraisers, donors, volunteers and partners play in helping The Christie deliver exceptional cancer care, pioneering research, and additional support services for patients and their families. We are deeply grateful to each and every one of you.
Thanks to your generosity, we raised an incredible £23.8m this year. For every £1 donated, 83p went directly towards supporting patients, while the remaining 17p helped us raise the next pound.
The stories in this year’s report bring to life the impact of your generosity and reflect the key pillars at the heart of our funding: research, care and treatment, education, and extra patient services.
Research remains a major focus as does our commitment to invest £30m in supporting the Trust’s research ambitions by 2030. In this report, you’ll read about pioneering research taking place to provide prostate cancer patients with kinder, gentler treatments designed to reduce the side effects associated with standard therapies - all made possible through supporter funding.
You’ll also hear about mum of 3 Annette Illing whose participation in a breast cancer study changed her life. Annette had no reason to believe she was at risk of breast cancer and has no family history of the disease. But to her shock, as part of the study, she was diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer. Without being part of the study, Annette would have waited another decade for her first routine mammogram. Your funding is already changing the lives of young women like Annette.
Providing additional patient services also continues to play a crucial role in The Christie experience. This year, we highlight new Charity-funded roles and initiatives that support patients’ emotional and mental wellbeing alongside their clinical care. From therapy dog visits for children and young people receiving treatment, to the upkeep of our gardens and green spaces, your support helps patients feel more comfortable, relaxed and cared for during some of the most difficult moments of their lives.
At a time of continued economic uncertainty and rising living costs, we remain humbled and inspired by the kindness and generosity shown by our supporters. Because of you, The Christie can continue its mission to provide kinder, gentler cancer care and remain a world leader in cancer research, treatment and patient support. Thank you.
