Jacob Hughes, Christie fundraiser

This month, we’re putting Jacob Hughes into our fundraiser hall of fame.

Jacob said The Christie charity means a lot to him as The Christie gave his mum a lot of support while she was being treated for breast cancer at the hospital. At the time, Jacob lived in Plymouth, and he felt so far away from his mum and her cancer treatment journey.

The only way Jacob could stay connected to his mum was to call every day to see how she was getting on with her cancer treatment. Jacob said often when he would call, his mum would talk about the kind work of the folk at The Christie and The Maggie’s centre.

As well as his mum being treated at The Christie, Jacob said he also knows a few friends who have been treated at the hospital. He said that the hard work of people at The Christie has been really important in supporting the friends and families of cancer patients he knows.

In support of his mum and in thanks for the treatment she received at The Christie, Jacob recently took part in a 24-hour gaming marathon to raise vital funds for The Christie charity. He played from 10am to 10am the next day without stopping, and included games such as Fortnite, Call of Duty, Pokémon and Mario Kart.

Jacob said that despite appearances, sitting and gaming for 24 hours solid was a real challenge – particularly on his eyes, backside and his sanity!

“I wasn’t going to run a marathon any time soon so doing something I loved and raising money for charity whilst doing it, seemed like a good bet. It was also great fun livestreaming it – making it interactive with guests and forfeits certainly drove donations towards us within the 24 hours!
“The Christie helped my mum with treatment, from her cancer diagnosis, surgery and chemotherapy, right through to remission. I am deeply thankful for the support of The Christie, which has meant I can still hold my mum today.”

We’re delighted to say that Jacob raised a fantastic £1,200 from his efforts. We’d like to say a big thanks to Jacob and to everyone who supported him with his challenge. Amazing fundraisers like Jacob and so many others mean we can keep supporting cancer patients and their families.
