This month we’re putting our volunteer fundraising group, The Congleton and District Christie Hospital Support Group, into our fundraiser hall of Fame.

Headed up by Pat McDonnell, the newly formed group have been raising money for several years now, but 2022 saw them become an official fundraising group of The Christie.

The Congleton and District Christie Hospital Support Group have been taking on various fundraising activities throughout 2022, including Christmas fairs and monthly secret tombolas at Rode Hall Market which have proved increasingly popular!

In autumn 2022, the group also organised their first ever firewalk at The Queen’s Head Pub. This saw 25 brave individuals walk over hot coals to collectively raise over £6,000 for The Christie.

The Congleton and District Christie Hospital Support Group have big plans to keep up their fundraising throughout 2023 – we can’t wait to see what they have in store!

“My motivation to start raising funds for The Christie came from my own treatment for cancer at the hospital a few years ago, just after my retirement as a headteacher. I started small, just doing car boot sales, often in the rain, but I soon came to realise by meeting and speaking to people at these events, that so many people have been touched by cancer and by talking about it, they soon wanted to lend their help in a variety of ways. We now have a wonderful team of friends, some of whom are presently attending The Christie in Macclesfield themselves, all keen to help, and I am so grateful for their support. We do open gardens, tombolas, shows, Christmas events, and have recently organised a successful firewalk at a local pub. The pub itself then chose to host their own event for The Christie soon afterwards on the back of the firewalk's success. Altogether we have raised over £25,000 for The Christie and 2023 will see our efforts continue, full of enjoyment and laughter as it has always been.”
