Becky Swift, Christie fundraiser

This month, we’re putting Becky Swift into our fundraiser Hall of Fame for taking on The Christie Charity Challenge in support of The Christie Charity, while being treated for breast cancer.

Becky wanted to show her support for The Christie after being diagnosed with breast cancer for a second time in 2024. She’s still under the care of the hospital to manage the symptoms of her cancer and says The Christie holds a special place in her heart.

To raise money for The Christie Charity, Becky signed up for The Christie Charity Challenge to complete 6 fundraising activities in 12 months. She set herself an ambitious fundraising target of £10,000 overall and said she saw The Christie Charity Challenge as a motivational way to break up her fundraising target into smaller achievable targets.

Becky said another draw of The Christie Charity Challenge for her was that she loves rewards, so she really enjoyed receiving the sections of the jigsaw medal as she progressed through her challenge.

The first fundraising activity Becky took on was to sell her bicycle. She said this was bittersweet as she’d bought the bike for exercise but found she couldn’t ride it after her diagnosis. Becky said that donating the money from the sale to The Christie Charity turned this into a positive.

Next, Becky organised a fundraising raffle, followed by a car boot sale and cake sale. Becky wanted to thank Manchester City FC for kindly donating a signed City shirt to her raffle as she raised hundreds of pounds raffling it off. She also said that during her car boot sale and cake sale, she was really touched when a young girl and her mum gave her their takings for The Christie as the Charity meant a lot to them.

Becky also took on a sponsored local litter pick, a fundraising DIY spa day with her friends and finally, an 80s music bingo afternoon. She said the bingo afternoon was her favourite event as although it took a lot of planning, it was so much fun and very well supported.

None of my challenges have been big physical challenges like marathons or climbing mountains. They have been smaller things that anyone could do. I’ve really enjoyed completing the challenge.

We’d like to say thank you to Becky for her fabulous fundraising efforts in her Christie Charity Challenge, raising just over £11,100. Fundraising like this helps us keep supporting cancer patients and their loved ones, over and above what the NHS funds.
