Helen and George Summerville, Christie fundraisers

Mother and son, Helen and George Summerville, have supported The Christie charity since Helen’s diagnosis of breast cancer in 2021. Helen was referred to The Christie for treatment and is now thankfully in remission.

To celebrate this and to say thank you to the staff who treated her, Helen has decided to join her son George in the Great Manchester Run to fundraise together for The Christie.

The Great Manchester Run is Manchester’s greatest day of running, held this year on Sunday 21 May 2023. You can take on either the 10km or half-marathon distance and help us to achieve our goal of a future without cancer.

When George ran the London Marathon in 2021, he raised over £11,000. This included match funding from AstraZeneca where he works in support of his mum’s treatment.

Following his experience training for the marathon, George has been helping his mum prepare for the race with regular running and a training plan. The 2 have also set up a joint JustGiving page to fundraise together.

"The treatment I received from the Christie was amazing, I had a 5-day course of radiotherapy and the staff were fantastic, very caring and supportive throughout. They made me feel better, even on the tough days, I'd just like to say thank you to them. George has inspired me to run the Manchester 10k. In 2021, he ran the London marathon in aid of the Christie and I was so proud of him. Now, it's my turn. We are training together and getting ready to reach our goal of completing the 10k together!"

“Mum's treatment at the Christie was absolutely brilliant and I could see how well looked after mum was so that was very reassuring for me! The fundraising for the Christie is our way of saying thank you for all the hard work they put in to getting mum better! We've done a few runs together and I'm getting a training plan together for mum so we can ace it! Mum is also running with a few friends during her other training runs and she's fast!”
