How Total Body PET-CT will bring life changing scanning to The Christie
Thanks to the incredible generosity of our fundraisers and supporters, The Christie Charity’s £7 million project to bring a Total Body PET-CT (Total Position Emission Tomography-Computed Tomography) scanner to The Christie is now fully funded. The scanner is currently being installed at the hospital, ready to help transform cancer care for patients in the North West.
PET-CT scanning plays a vital role in many patients’ cancer journeys. It helps diagnose a range of different cancers, show how far they have spread and determine the best treatments. Total Body PET-CT scanners are among the most advanced scanners in the world, capturing high-quality images of a patient’s entire body in as little as 5 minutes. This is much more comfortable for patients than standard PET-CT scans, which can take up to half an hour.
Once operational, the new scanner will increase scanning capacity, allow more patients to be scanned and help detect diseases earlier. It will support quicker diagnosis and more precise, personalised patient care, while involving much less exposure to radiation.
The scanner will also increase the number of research scans at The Christie from 300 to at least 1,000 each year. This will give researchers powerful new insights into cancer, support the development of better treatment plans and help train the next generation of cancer experts.
