Beverley Fernandez, Christie fundraiser

Beverley has been a supporter of The Christie ever since her son Elliot was treated at the hospital for alveolar rhabdomyosarcoma, a type of rare sarcoma.

Elliot’s cancer treatment helped to improve his health enough for him to pass his first year of university with flying colours. He was a ball boy for Manchester City and a huge fan of the club – he even walked onto the pitch at the Etihad before one of their games with Everton.

But sadly, Elliott suffered a relapse with fluid on his brain and signs of cancer found on both his liver and spine. Elliot died in 2017 at just 19 years old.

Ever since then, Beverley has regularly donated to The Christie. She’s determined to help other families with children like Elliot by raising money for cancer research.

For 2022, Beverley decided to take on The Christie Zip Slide challenge. She and the other plucky participants will soar 1,000ft from the Imperial War Museum across the canal to Media City.

Beverley had previously signed up to take part in the Zip Slide in March 2020. Unfortunately, this was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and Beverley is ready to finally take on the dizzying heights of the Zip Slide.

“I’m really looking forward to being able to take on the Zip Slide after COVID. I’ve started fundraising again and have already hit £125 on my JustGiving page.
“I’m doing this in Elliot’s memory and for all those we have lost and those young adults and children suffering with all types of cancer and undergoing brutal treatments as Elliot did. It’s so very underfunded and we need to help all we can – and yes, I am mad!”
