Mike wanted to fundraise for The Christie Charity to say thanks as both of his grandmothers were treated at the hospital for breast cancer. His dad had previously organised several fundraising events for The Christie Charity for the same reason but had recently died. This gave Mike another reason to fundraise for The Christie Charity – to carry on his dad’s legacy.
As Mike’s dad had been a member of a golf club for 38 years, Mike decided to organise a charity golf day. This proved to be a big task, with Mike asking for fundraising and prizes donations from businesses and also having to liaise with the golf club itself.
As if that wasn’t enough, Mike was also trying to organise his own wedding at that time. Despite all of the demands on his time, Mike said he enjoyed the challenge, and really enjoyed being in touch with the fundraising team at The Christie Charity.
On the day of the golf tournament, Mike said it went better than he could ever have wished for. Not only did the weather shine down on them, but Mike also said it was amazing to see such a range and variety of people coming together for a truly worthy cause. Mike and his loved ones said his dad would have loved the day, with Mike’s dad’s colleagues and golf club members turning up to support.
72 golfers took to the course in teams of 4, with the top 2 Stableford points of each hole going towards the teams’ total. The top 3 highest scoring teams won prizes in the evening ranging from new putters to new carry bags. There were also opportunities to win additional spot prizes, with challenges such as straightest drive and closest to the pins competitions.
After the golf, everyone got changed and returned to the clubhouse for a 2-course evening meal, a raffle and an auction, before dancing the night away to some of Mike’s dad’s favourite songs.
As this was Mike’s first attempt at organising a charity event, he didn’t want to be too ambitious with the fundraising target, aiming to raise £3,000 for The Christie Charity. In the end, he managed to raise just over £7,730 with his charity golf day.
Mike said he was staggered by this total, and wanted to thank everyone for how generous they were and how everyone dug deep for such a worthy cause. He said he was also proud of how the golf event helped keep his dad’s name alive and continued his fundraising efforts.
“The care my grandmothers received at The Christie was exceptional and our family is forever indebted to The Christie Charity.
“My advice to anyone thinking of organising a golf event, or any charity event in general would be 2 things. Firstly, try and organise it with as much notice as possible. This is because I found when asking businesses for donations (especially the larger companies) that they set out what charity events they will support at the start of the year and often, if that’s not included at the start, their allocation is often full.
