Supported Employability Programme

Supported employability programme

We are committed to creating welcoming, safe and meaningful opportunities for looked after young people and care leavers between 16 and 25 who are not currently in education, employment or training.

We take a person‑centred and trauma‑informed approach, working with each young person and the care leaving team to design a placement that reflects their interests, strengths and goals. When a young person feels ready, we build a personalised plan that makes work experience manageable, positive and empowering.

Our programmes usually run for 6 to 12 weeks, for 1 or 2 days per week.

Young people have told us that having a regular weekly routine (instead of a short, intensive placement) helps build confidence, supports travel planning and creates a sense of consistency and safety.

Each placement is tailored to the individual and designed to support confidence, skills and future opportunities.

When a young person is ready to begin, we work gently and collaboratively with them, their care leaving team and/or key workers to create a plan that feels right for them. This includes:

  • clear placement details
  • introductions to supervisors and a buddy/mentor
  • a simple, manageable schedule
  • free lunches and uniforms where needed
  • space to talk about any concerns, access needs or adjustments
  • regular check‑ins throughout the placement

Care leavers are one of the most marginalised and socially excluded groups in society with 1 in 14 progressing to Higher Education compared to 1 in 2 in young people.

Here, we aim to raise awareness of the challenges faced by the care experienced community and provide improved access to education, practical training and life skills to young people in our local community.

What this programme is here to support

  • Tailored practical work experience placement
  • Chance to explore NHS careers at own pace
  • NHS Applications and interview technique workshops
  • Christie Institute reference and certificate upon completion

What do our staff say?

“Supervising a young person on placement is undoubtedly one of the most rewarding yet complex experiences for an employer. This opportunity not only facilitates skill development but also allows for the observation of a young person’s growth and confidence-building. In the past year, we have had the pleasure of working with several placements and witnessing their personal development has been particularly gratifying.

"Young individuals often require a chance, someone who believes in them and a nurturing environment in which they can flourish. When provided with this support, the potential for transformation is significant. The fresh perspectives that our placements bring have invigorated our work environment, adding a new dimension to our established catering team. The mentorship aspect of this process is truly fulfilling as we guide them through their professional journeys.

"The dynamics and culture of our team have positively evolved, with each placement representing a success story. We strive to create a supportive environment that allows the social and professional skills of our placements to flourish, and as a department, we take great pride in their achievements. By focusing on these key aspects, we facilitate a positive and productive placement experience for both our team and the young individuals we support”.
