The Christie Fellowship Programme

Continuous professional development at a world-leading cancer centre

Our Fellowship Programme encompasses a variety of fellowship positions which are open to both UK and internationally-based doctors. It provides pathways for learning and development across multiple disciplines and disease sites at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust, one of Europe's largest cancer sites.

What is a Christie Fellowship?

A Christie Fellowship is a fixed-term position for medical professionals, offering the opportunity to work with and learn from world-leading oncology experts. Fellowships at The Christie facilitate hands-on experience and professional development within a specialist NHS Foundation Trust.

The Christie Institute offers a range of fellowship opportunities. Fellowships will include working with specialist clinical teams and can involve undertaking clinical research within our world-renowned facilities. Where possible, we ensure fellowships are bespoke to candidate needs and interests.

As a fellow at The Christie, you can expect:

  • Unparalleled access to clinical and technical experts with a wealth of experience in their specialist fields
  • Opportunities to participate in one of the largest and most well-respected cancer research communities in the world
  • Experience and support to become a clinical educator

How to apply for a Christie Fellowship

The majority of our fellowship positions are advertised via the NHS jobs website, so we suggest searching there first for any suitable vacancies. Please be aware this may involve checking the NHS Jobs website multiple times across a period of a few months, as fellowships are advertised as and when they are made available throughout the year. The application process and eligibility criteria for a fellowship will be included in each individual job advertisement.

The Trust also works with individual organisations to create bespoke fellowship opportunities for a range of candidates. Details of these fellowships and how to apply can be found on this webpage in the “What fellowships are available?” section.

Please get in touch via the contact form at the bottom of the page if you have any enquiries about how to apply for a fellowship.

The Christie offers fellowship opportunities for UK medical graduates looking to develop their specialist knowledge and skills in oncology. Depending on the specialty and level of training, UK Graduates may need to take an out of programme experience (OOPE) to complete a fellowship at The Christie.

For more information, please discuss this with your training programme director (TPD) or the supervisor for the fellowship you are considering applying for.

The Christie welcomes international candidates, and we have a vast amount of experience working with fellows from across the globe. If you are interested in working in the UK, please take a look at the information on the NHS Health Education England website. This will provide useful information to help you decide whether coming to work in the UK is the right option for you.

The application and agreement process for international candidates is complex, and we suggest allowing at least 6 months to make any arrangements before the proposed starting date. There are also some requirements for working in the UK – please see the information below for registration and documentation advice for international candidates. Unless stated in the person specification for a fellowship position, you are not required to make any of the following arrangements before being offered a fellowship position and instructed by our medical workforce team.

GMC registration

To work in the UK, you need to be registered with the General Medical Council (GMC). If you are from the European Union, you are eligible for full registration with the GMC. If you are from outside the European Union, you need to have passed the PLAB (Professional and Linguistic Assessment Board) Tests, or get an exemption, before applying for GMC registration. This is the test the GMC uses to ensure international doctors have the basic medical competence and communication skills to practice in the UK.

International candidates applying for GMC registration also need to demonstrate satisfactory knowledge of the English language. To do this, they must meet certain requirements in the academic version of the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).

Visas and documentation

International candidates may require a work visa. Our Medical Workforce Team will advise on visa requirements. Information on visas can be obtained from the Home Office website.

In addition to the above, you will also be required to provide all or some of the following documentation during the pre-employment checks process which begins once a candidate has been offered a fellowship position after the interview stage:

  • Passport
  • Reference from current employer
  • Letter of Good Standing from local Constabulary or Ministry of Justice Department
  • Up-to-date Police Check from home country or country of employment/study

Travel and accommodation

Please note: you should not book any UK travel or accommodation until you are advised to do so by our Medical Workforce Team. Further checks will need to be completed after your arrival in the UK before you are able to begin in your fellowship post, including an occupational health check.

Fellowship details

This unique fellowship is part of a national pilot program aiming to develop core competencies in the new field of supportive oncology among doctors working throughout the whole continuum of cancer care.

The aim of these 12-month posts is to equip the fellow with knowledge and skills in symptom control, management of side effects of cancer treatments, psychological support, complex pain management and research in supportive oncology.

Demonstration of achievement of the curriculum including completion of appropriate workplace-based assessments and attendance at national (remote) teaching events will result in a certificate of fellowship completion at the end of the 12 months from RCR/UKASCC.

The role will be suitable for doctors who have completed Internal Medicine or GP Training particularly for those wishing to gain additional experience in supportive oncology.

3 supportive oncology fellowships are available per year at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust.
