Do I have 24-hour access to the Library?
Yes, you can access the physical Library space 24/7 with your Trust ID badge. The Library is staffed Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. You can also access our electronic resources 24/7 with your OpenAthens account.
If you have any issues with accessing the Library, or the corridor to department 60, with your ID badge please email the-christie.idbadge@nhs.net to request access.
How do I join the Library?
By completing our online registration form on HIVE (The Christie staff intranet). Once we have added you to our system you will receive a welcome email.
Alternately, you can visit the Library and ask a member of staff for a paper registration form.
Will I receive a Library card?
No, we do not issue Library cards, but you will need a barcode to use our self-service book issue machine. Please ask a member of Library staff at the front desk for a barcode.
How do I search for a book?
You can search for books and eBooks on our book catalogue. You will need an active OpenAthens account to access our eBooks.
How can I borrow books?
You can use our self-service machine, located to the left of our front desk. We will need to issue a barcode to you to use the self-service machine. Please ask a member of Library staff at the front desk for a barcode.
How long can I borrow a book for?
You can borrow a book from the Library for up to 4 weeks at a time.
Can I renew my books?
You can renew your books if another user hasn’t reserved them. Books can be renewed in person, by phone on 0161 446 3452, or via email. You can also renew your books using the self-service machine in the Library.
How do I return my books?
You can return books via the self-service machine in the Library or by handing them to a member of Library staff. Alternately, there is a book return box located on the ground floor of the library (through the first set of doors, after the lockers, on the left).
Can I reserve a book?
Yes, books can be reserved by speaking to a member of Library staff in person, on the phone, or via email. You can also reserve books on the Library catalogue (login required).
How can I search for journals?
You can search for specific eJournal titles via BrowZine (accessible via HIVE) or you can search for journal articles via the Knowledge and Library Hub.
How do I get an OpenAthens account?
You can register for an OpenAthens account by going to openathens.nice.org.uk. If you require any assistance, please get in touch. For more information about OpenAthens, please visit our OpenAthens page.
Can I recommend a book or journal to the Library?
You can, we are always happy to take resource recommendations and will do our best to add recommendations to our physical or electronic collection. Please send us an email with any resource recommendations.
If we are unable to purchase a copy, we will try to borrow a copy from another library.
Can I request access to articles that the Library doesn't subscribe to?
Yes, please complete the request an article form on HIVE or drop us an email with the article details and we will do our best to source it for you. There is no charge for this service.
Can you help me with a literature search?
Yes, as long as you don't require it for academic purposes. We cannot complete literature searches for university assignments or projects. We will be more than happy to meet with you to discuss your search though, just get in touch.
If your literature search is for work or research purposes, you can request one on HIVE or email us to discuss it further.
Do you run training sessions?
Yes, we run regular training sessions on Literature Searching, Critical Appraisal, Reference Managers, Point-of-Care Tools (such as UpToDate), and Accessing Electronic Resources. Scheduled sessions can be found and signed up to via our HIVE training page. We are also able to arrange 1-to-1 sessions, please email us to schedule this.
Are there PCs that I can use in the Library?
Yes, we have 12 Library PCs that anyone with a Trust login can use.
Can I print in the Library?
The Library's printer is connected to the Trust's printer network and offers A4 and A3 printing. You can also use it to scan and photocopy. Please let us know if you need help setting up your ID badge to work with the printers.
Can I book a room in the Library?
Yes, we have 2 bookable rooms in the Library:
- A small study room with a capacity of 5, containing 2 laptop docking stations
- A larger training room with a capacity for 10 learners and 1 trainer, containing 10 PCs, 1 trainer’s PC, and a display screen.
You can check the availability of these rooms and book them, via the Trust’s UBook system.
How can I get my article added to The Christie Repository?
If you have published an article affiliated to The Christie or CRUK let us know! We do a monthly search for new publications but we do occasionally miss one, so do let us know if your article is missing from The Christie Research Repository. Email the Library with the details.
