Volunteers’ week is a national campaign supported by the National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO). It gives organisations like The Christie a chance to say thank you to volunteers for all the hard work they do.

Volunteers at The Christie play an important role in improving the patient experience. Whether they’re supporting at events, working in the May Draper tea bar or providing a meet and greet service, their work frees up the time of paid members of staff at all levels.

At The Christie, we currently have 157 active volunteers in 21 different job roles. Our volunteers range from 16 to 91 years old, and have a wide range of duties.

What’s more, 32 of our current active volunteers have volunteered for 10 years or more. It’s this long-time dedication – as well as the commitment of our newer volunteers – that makes our volunteers truly invaluable.

That’s why we want to show our thanks for all that our volunteers do to help support our work here at The Christie.

What people say about our volunteers

"Our volunteers are amazing, giving precious time, a listening ear, and much-needed emotional and spiritual first aid on our wards on a regular basis."

- Andrew Bradley, chaplaincy

"Our volunteers are such a valuable asset to the team. They are professional, enthusiastic, selfless and compassionate. They take such pride in their role and have a wonderful relationship with the staff, patients and relatives."

- Gemma Jones, ward 4

"The support we receive from our admin volunteers is invaluable. Without their help each week, we wouldn’t be able to get through as much as we do. It’s wonderful to have them as part of our team."

- Jen Kent, The Christie charity

"Each volunteer is very valuable to the community team. They’re committed, reliable and it’s been a pleasure having them in our office and at our events. We really appreciate their support."

Laura Livesey, The Christie charity

"We thoroughly loved having volunteers on the IPU. What a huge asset they are. They are very much part of the team… family in fact."

- Susy Pramod, IPU

What’s on this volunteers’ week?

Volunteer celebration event

As part of volunteer's week, we hosted our our annual celebration event on Tuesday 4 June.

The event was to give a special thank you from chief executive Roger Spencer and chair of The Christie Chris Outram for all of the hard work our volunteers have put in over the past year.

We also gave out some long service awards for those who have reached their 10th and 20th years of volunteering at The Christie.
