Do you believe that all cancer patients should have access to the best treatment, regardless of where they live? At The Christie, we certainly do. And, as a result, something very exciting is about to happen…

Our main Christie hospital in Withington is delivering the very best in cancer treatment and care to patients across the North West, and our local radiotherapy centres in Salford and Oldham offer care closer to home to patients north of Manchester.

Now we want to offer the same local support to patients south of Manchester, including Macclesfield and the surrounding areas by building a world-class cancer care centre in Macclesfield.

More than 45 minutes’ travel

Currently, 8,000 patients in East Cheshire have to travel more than the recommended 45 minutes for their regular chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatments.

Take patients like Gemma. She is a 36-year-old mother of two young children who was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2017 and given excellent treatment at The Christie.

However, as someone living close to the Macclesfield area, Gemma’s treatment was delivered quite far away at the Withington site, which meant she really struggled to cope with day-to-day life.

Even when she was undergoing chemotherapy and radiotherapy, Gemma and her husband Ben had to continue juggling their busy lives, looking after their two girls, Ruby and Scarlet – and doing all they could to keep their daily routine on track.

“A Christie cancer care centre in Macclesfield would have made a huge difference to me and my family. I’m delighted that the new centre in Macclesfield will also offer clinical trials as I know that so many patients now benefit from them.”

Bringing cancer care closer to communities

This is why The Christie urgently needs funds to help build The Christie cancer care centre at Macclesfield. It is set to begin construction at Macclesfield District General Hospital in 2020.

It is due to open by the end of 2021, when it is expected to see around 1,500 patients a year – that’s approximately 40,000 appointments every year.

And that will make a big difference for those patients like Gemma who have had to travel so far to receive their treatment.
