Saica Paper UK, Christie fundraiser
This month, we’re putting the team at Saica Paper UK Ltd in our fundraiser Hall of Fame following their ‘White Socks Inspired’ running challenge.
Saica Paper UK Ltd is a paper manufacturer based in Carrington. The team at Saica Paper decided to support The Christie charity following the cancer diagnosis of an employee, John.
At work, John is known as ‘Johnny White Socks’ as he always wears white socks. He has worked for the company for 8 years and is a valued member of the team. When he told his friends and colleagues about his diagnosis, they wanted to help support John by fundraising for The Christie charity.
John’s colleagues set a challenge to fundraise by running wearing white socks, dubbing the challenge ‘White Socks Inspired’.
Saica Paper manufacture recycled paper and their plant manager calculated how much paper the machine produces in one perfect 12 hour shift. They then converted this into kilometres (990km) to come up with a target total running distance.
The challenge was set for any colleagues, friends or family to complete as a combined effort during January.
A group of 80 colleagues, friends and family took on the ‘White Socks Inspired’ running challenge. The team smashed their target, running a collective total distance of 2,984km throughout the month. The team kept in touch on social media, uploading photos of their runs and sharing their achievements.
Saica Paper agreed to contribute £2 for every kilometre completed so combined with the team’s fundraising, the group raised just over an incredible £7,550 for The Christie charity.
“John is receiving ongoing treatment at The Christie and we understand how valuable the treatment is in helping John and the support he and his family need during this difficult time.
“The group really helped to encourage everyone to get out there and cheer people along. It was fantastic to see John add his own posts – if he could get out and walk, so could we all.
“As an organisation, Saica Paper UK Ltd host several charity events each year and we will look to continue to support The Christie within our future events. Although we have been spurred on by John’s illness to help The Christie, the work they do is invaluable and unfortunately many of us will experience the effects of cancer within our own lives.”
