Mike Collins, Christie fundraiser

This month, we’re putting Mike Collins and his team in our fundraiser hall of fame.

Mike has been a supporter of The Christie charity ever since his mum, Linda Collins, sadly died at the hospital in November 2020. Linda was diagnosed with malignant melanoma and treated at The Christie before she died.

To say thanks for Linda’s treatment, Mike and his team decided they wanted to give back to melanoma research by taking on an incredible challenge. In September 2021, the team decided to take on a coast to coast cycle. They travelled from Whitehaven, Cumbria to Tynemouth, Newcastle and covered around 150 miles over 2 days.

Mike and the team that took part were of mixed abilities. Some had only started cycling just a few weeks before taking on the cycling challenge but thankfully, they all managed to complete the mammoth cycle ride.

“We did the challenge to raise money and say thank you to The Christie team who looked after my mum. They treated my mum with care and compassion which helped my mum on her cancer journey.
“The challenge seemed daunting as some of the guys taking part only began cycling a few weeks before, but they all achieved the goal, we had such a wonderful weekend and made memories that will last a lifetime.
“The most important thing was we raised money which will go to a wonderful cause and hopefully help other people suffering with this horrible disease in the future.”

We want to say a big thanks to Mike and all the team – you are all incredible! Thanks to their efforts, they have raised over £10,000 for melanoma research.

Fundraising like Mike’s helps make it possible for our experts to develop new treatments for cancer. We want to double the number of trials we offer at The Christie by 2030 – and fundraising will help us do this.
