Team Swimathon for Bex, Christie fundraisers
Rebecca Hind – known as Bex to her friends – was diagnosed in 2019 with pseudomyxoma peritonei, a type of abdominal cancer. She was referred to The Christie for 8 rounds of chemotherapy and 2 major operations.
In March 2020, as Bex recovered from surgery, her friends organised the Swimathon for Bex event. Bex was previously a member of a triathlon club and her former club mates wanted to raise money for the pseudomyxoma peritonei fund in The Christie charity. From the Swimathon for Bex event plus a few other fundraising events, Bex and her family and friends raised just over £10,000!
Unfortunately, just 6 months after Bex’s cancer went into remission, her doctor told her that the cancer had come back. To help support Bex and raise more money for The Christie charity during the COVID-19 pandemic, the team decided to organise another event.
Swimathon for Bex 2 took place on 30 August at Lazonby Pool in Penrith. The aim was for the team to collectively swim 85km, as this is the total distance of all 16 of Cumbria’s lakes. In the end, the total distance swum was 60.7km – still a really incredible distance.
“The Swimathon for Bex 2 was incredible and we were overwhelmed with the kindness and support shown by friends, family, local organisations and businesses joining us to raise money for The Christie. The weather was kind and we had 33 teams that swam at Lazonby Pool with another 10 Satellite Teams from England, Scotland, Wales and Australia swimming at other locations with a combined swim distance of 60,704 metres.
“Although we didn’t reach our target of 85,000 metres, we certainly smashed our fundraising target beating last year’s total of £6,035 by over £2,740.
“Yesterday was also another big day for me, it was a 6-monthly scan at The Christie hospital. Although the barium is never pleasant, it made me feel so much better to proudly hand over a cheque for £8779.35.”

The fundraising from the Swimathon for Bex 2 means the team have raised almost £19,000 for The Christie charity in 18 months. This is a fantastic effort and will help us keep supporting cancer patients and their families, over and above what the NHS funds.
