Mark Hunter, Christie patient

Mark Hunter was a fit and healthy man. With 3 wonderful children, a loving wife and a thriving career, life could not have been better. But he started to suffer from abdominal pains while training for the Manchester Half Marathon.

Mark hadn’t been to the doctors for a long time. Thankfully, his wife Di convinced him that it was time to seek medical advice. He was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma on top of underlying follicular lymphoma. It’s possible Mark could have had the cancer for years.

After 2 unsuccessful rounds of chemotherapy, Mark was referred to The Christie.

A number of consultations, blood tests and scans later, Mark was one of the first patients in the UK to have CAR-T therapy.

CAR-T is a revolutionary treatment that The Christie is proud to offer. This pioneering therapy alters a patient’s T-cells, so they are able to recognise and target cancer themselves.

Mark’s T-cells got to work quickly over the days that followed his treatment and soon eradicated his cancer. He is now so grateful for every member of staff who helped him on his journey.

In particular, Mark recalls the wide range of wellbeing therapies that The Christie’s complementary therapy team was able to offer, thanks to our supporters’ generosity.

“We are very lucky to live so close to this centre of contemporary excellence.
“I can’t express enough the gratitude I have for everyone involved in my care.”
