Douglas Connell and Alicia Calow, Christie fundraisers

Alicia Calow works as a therapeutic radiographer at The Christie at Salford local radiotherapy centre. Her job is to deliver specialised radiotherapy treatment to cancer patients closer to home in the Salford area – something that she’s really seen the benefit of during the COVID-19 pandemic.

To keep fit during the COVID-19 pandemic, Alicia and her partner Douglas Connell took up cycling together. They’re now planning to challenge themselves by taking on their first 100-mile cycle in the popular Manchester 100 bike ride.

The Manchester 100 is a cycle ride on 5 September 2021, starting and finishing at Wythenshawe Park. Participants can take on either 100km or 100 miles of cycling for The Christie while touring the stunning Cheshire countryside.

By taking part in this event, you'll be helping us raise much needed funds to build The Christie at Macclesfield, a new centre designed to bring cancer care closer to home in East Cheshire.

“This is our first 100-mile cycle, so it will be a massive shock to the system, but having a goal of fundraising for The Christie is the motivation we need!
“The Christie provides an incredibly important service that has been heavily impacted by the pandemic, with charity income dropping by at least 25%, so we just want to help in whatever way we can for the charity, and cancer patients and their families.”

Douglas and Alicia are aiming to raise £500 with their Manchester 100 challenge. We’d like to wish them good luck for 5 September – we’ll be supporting you every mile!
