Carly is supporting The Christie charity by taking on the Great Manchester Run 10k 2021. She decided to take on the running challenge to say thanks after The Christie treated her grandad, Peter.

The Great Manchester Run is Manchester’s greatest day of running, held this year on Sunday 26 September 2021. You can take on either the 10km or half-marathon distance and help us to achieve our goal of a future without cancer.

Peter first had treatment at The Christie for prostate cancer in 1996. He had radiotherapy and after this, he was told that the cancer was in remission.

But sadly, in September 2012, Peter fell ill during a cruise. He went to hospital and was told that he had bile duct cancer. He had an operation in November 2012 and went back to The Christie in January 2013 for a 6-month course of chemotherapy.

Although Peter’s cancer went into remission, he was told in March 2015 that he had liver cancer. Unfortunately, this was uncurable – meaning any treatment would be to manage the cancer.

Peter had several different types of chemotherapy over the next couple of years to manage the cancer. This worked for a while and seemed to control the tumour. Carly said that Peter continued to live life to its fullest at this time, even managing to go to Australia for 5 weeks with his wife and celebrating his 80th birthday with all his family in April 2017.

But in May 2017, Peter’s latest scan showed that his tumour had started growing and there were no further options to treat the cancer. Peter and his family made the heart-breaking decision to let him die naturally. On 3 July 2017, Peter sadly died. He was able to die in his sleep, with his family around him.

Carly said that throughout Peter’s treatment, he remained so positive. She said he is an inspiration and her hero.

“On the 26 September, I am doing the Great Manchester 10km run to raise money as a small token of gratitude to thank the amazing medical and support staff at The Christie hospital for all the fabulous and dedicated care they gave to my grandad Peter and continue to give to thousands every day.
“I know my grandad, as I do, would want to thank the medical and support staff at The Christie – they were absolutely marvellous and deserve the highest praise, allowing my grandad to surpass his 12 months’ prognosis.”
