Andrew Gravett and Ben Glimmerveen, Christie fundraisers

Andrew Gravett has been a supporter of The Christie ever since his sister-in-law Catherine Vermeulen was treated at the hospital for breast cancer. Catherine had treatment for her cancer at The Christie over a 10-year period but sadly died in October 2019.

As Catherine always spoke so positively of The Christie during her treatment, Andrew wanted to give something back to The Christie charity. That’s why he and his cousin Ben Glimmerveen are taking on the Manchester 100 cycle ride in support of The Christie charity this September.

The Manchester 100 is a cycle ride on 5 September 2021, starting and finishing at Wythenshawe Park. Participants can take on either 100km or 100 miles of cycling for The Christie while touring the stunning Cheshire countryside.

By taking part in this event, participants will help us raise much needed funds to build The Christie at Macclesfield, a new centre designed to bring cancer care closer to home in East Cheshire.

As well as wanting to say thanks for Catherine’s care at The Christie, Andrew’s also taking part in the Manchester 100 cycle ride as part of team AstraZeneca. Staff members from the pharmaceutical company are taking on several fundraising challenges in support of The Christie at Macclesfield campaign.

“Cath developed breast cancer and had many trips to The Christie over a near 10-year period. She always spoke highly of them and they helped her to combat the disease and carry on as normal. Cath was so determined to beat all the odds and it is some of that determination that has rubbed off on me and why I am doing the Manchester 100mile bike ride in aid of The Christie.
“Ben saw the Manchester 100-mile ride online and as it is going towards The Christie at Macclesfield, it seemed a perfect chance to do a ride and give something back to a cause so close to our hearts. Cath lived in Poynton so travelling to Macclesfield for Cancer care would be easier than the trips to Manchester, so we want to raise money in her memory so that others can benefit in the future.”
