The purpose of The Christie Charity Ball 2020 was to raise funds to build a new world class transformational research facility, to replace the Paterson building which was extensively damaged by a fire in 2017.

This star-studded, ‘Atlantis’ themed event took place at The Principal Hotel in Manchester in March 2020 and raised £163,000.

Celebrities who attended included former Coronation Street actress Katie McGlynn, Gogglebox’s Julie Malone, The Apprentice’s Lewis Ellis, Manchester United’s Max Taylor and former Rochdale footballer, Joe Thompson.

The event was sponsored by ladies online fashion retailer AX Paris and construction company Seddons, who offered great support and generosity to make this an unforgettable night raising funds for a very important cause.

The night consisted of glamour, fine dining and top class entertainment in the stunning ballroom at The Principal, with acts such as Baiana, The ICON Band and guests dancing through the night with a DJ set by Packy Lee from Peaky Blinders.

The ‘Atlantis’ theme was brought to life with underwater LED wall displays, magical table centre pieces and our host, Poseidon, who was played by actor Patrick Mcbride.

Prizes auctioned on the night included a tour of the Peaky Blinders set, a Tunnel Club experience at Manchester City and a tour of Michael Owen’s racing stables, with the auction hosted by Adam Partridge, who is best known for appearing on Bargain Hunt.

All funds raised on the night will be attributed to the new £150m flagship building which will be a purpose-built biomedical cancer research centre, bringing together three powerhouses of innovation – The Christie NHS Foundation Trust, The University of Manchester and Cancer Research UK.

Professor Tim Somervaille, a consultant in haematological oncology at The Christie, said: “The ball was an amazing success, one of the best yet, and we are hugely grateful to all our guests and supporters who made this possible”.
