A leading cancer consultant is hoping to set Macclesfield alight in order to raise funds for the new £26 million Christie at Macclesfield centre.

Dr Andrew Sykes, director of clinical oncology and clinical lead for The Christie at Macclesfield project is calling for people to join him at The Christie Fire Walk in Macclesfield town centre later this month.

Dr Sykes will be taking part in the daring challenge which aims to raise money for the new cancer care facility which will provide care closer to home for more than 1,500 patients a year.

Dr Sykes, who will be the first participant to take on the challenge on the night, said: “It will be a great experience and I won’t be standing on ceremony when it comes to walking over the hot coals.

“But it is sure to be a great event and an uplifting evening of entertainment and it would be great to see as many people as possible taking part for such a great cause.

“The Centre will be very welcome news for anyone from the area who will be touched by cancer in the future.

“We have already heard from hundreds of people who have experienced cancer how much difference the new centre will make. Whilst patients and families are prepared to travel to The Christie in Withington for specialist services, we know that most would prefer to have those services locally where possible. The Christie at Macclesfield will provide the highest standard of cancer care for patients.”

“So I urge the people of Macclesfield and Cheshire to get involved and take part in the Walk of Fire with me.”

The Christie Fire Walk will see participants walk barefoot over a bed of hot embers to raise money on Thursday October 24 at 6.30pm outside Macclesfield Town Hall.

Sporting events manager at The Christie charity, Lindsey Farthing, added: “The Walk of Fire is a really fun event and is designed to help overcome fear and to inspire people to do things they didn’t think possible.

“The event is managed by our industry experts, UK FIREWALK, and they provide a training session to help you perfect your technique and spark your excitement for the challenge ahead.

“The event is always emotional and uplifting. We are delighted that this year’s event is supporting our ambitious plans for a new state of art £26m Christie at Macclesfield cancer centre.”
