Charity partner for Great Manchester Run

Press release posted 26 May 2016

The Christie charity in Manchester has announced that it is to become the official charity partner of the biggest 10k run in the North West, The Great Manchester Run for 2017.

Participants will be given the option to raise funds for The Christie as the nominated charity as part of the sign up process.

This announcement comes as race host, The Great Run Company opens registrations and launches its brand new half marathon taking place on the same day, Sunday 28th May.

Over 1,600 runners took part for The Christie at this year’s event, raising an estimated £300,000 for cancer patients, including former Christie patient, Adam Irvine, 34 from Audenshaw. Adam was diagnosed with testicular cancer aged 26 and was told treatment may prevent him becoming a dad.

He said: “I ran for The Christie to say thank you for the excellent care and treatment I received. Without The Christie I wouldn’t be here today and my wife and I wouldn’t have our daughter Erin who was conceived a few years after I received the all clear.

Erin took part in the mini and junior runs and I couldn’t be prouder. We’ll both be back next year to raise even more money for cancer patients at The Christie.

Lucy Naylor, sporting events manager at The Christie charity, said: “We are thrilled to be chosen as the nominated charity for next year’s Great Manchester Run and feel honoured that Manchester City Council has put us forward.

Each year, we have an increase in sign-ups and we hope that with being the nominated charity and the choice of 10k and half marathon distances available, even more people will be encouraged to take part on Team Christie in 2017.

The Christie has a limited number of FREE charity places available now for the 10k. Please visit to claim your place.

The Christie will also have charity places available for the half marathon distance. If you would like to be the first to hear when our places are available please email  or call 0161 446 3400.

If you can’t wait for that, registrations are now open at for both events and you can select to run for The Christie.

All funds raised will be used to help cancer patients across the North West receive the best possible care and treatment, and allow the specialist cancer centre to continue to make  research breakthroughs and invest in the very latest  technology and equipment available.

The Christie charity supports the work of The Christie NHS Foundation Trust through its fundraising activities, and delivers projects, equipment and improvements that are over and above what the NHS funds. The charity has over 43,000 supporters who raised a record breaking £15.8m last year.
