Responsibilities

Dr Saunders joined paediatric and sarcoma teams at The Christie using his extensive previous experience to support development of the Proton Beam Therapy programme in readiness for the centre opening in 2018.

Dr Saunders is a Trustee of the Childrens’ Cancer and Leukaemia Group and serves on the Executive Committee of CCLG as well as being Secretary of the CCLG Radiotherapy Group. He has formerly been a member of the Childrens’ Cancer Clinical Reference Group and member of the RCR Faculty Board (Clinical Oncology).

Professional biography

After graduating from the University of Leicester, Dr Saunders completed general medical training in both the East and West Midlands. His oncology training started in Cambridge but the majority was completed in the Yorkshire Deanery supplemented by experience at UCLH/Great Ormond Street.  He became a consultant in clinical oncology in 2009 at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust and Head of Service there in 2011.

Whilst in Nottingham Dr Saunders contributed to the development of the East Midlands Childrens’ and Young Persons’ Integrated Cancer Service and developed an advanced paediatric IMRT programme. Proton Beam Therapy training has included a fellowship at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital.

Research Interest

Dr Saunders has a particular interest in the management of Wilms’ tumours with radiation therapy and is the UK radiotherapy representative on the SIOP renal tumours study group. Dr Saunders continues to contribute to a research portfolio (in collaboration with Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust and De Montfort University) aiming to support improvements in the care of LGBT people who develop cancer.

Educational Interests

Dr Saunders was previously Chair of the RCR Oncology Registrars’ Forum and has also established a successful clinical oncology teaching programme for Nottingham trainees in clinical oncology.
