MSCC Coordinators:

Lena Richards (Network MSCC Educator)

Lena qualified as a Physiotherapist in 1982 from Withington School of Physiotherapy, Manchester. She started working in oncology in 1993 at The Christie where she worked in the Physiotherapy Department for 20 years.

She has been part of the MSCC steering group in Greater Manchester and Cheshire since the beginning and helped to develop the local guidelines, MSCC pathway and ‘Red Flags’ alert card. She was appointed to develop the new role of MSCC Coordinator service which was launched in November 2013. Education for patients and clinicians is a big part of the role, and this has been and continues to be disseminated across the Manchester Cancer network.

Claire Shanahan (Therapeutic Radiographer & MSCC Coordinator)

Claire graduated as a therapeutic radiographer from the University of Portsmouth in 2013. On graduation, Claire joined The Christie as a radiographer and progressed to senior radiographer in 2015. She joined the Acute Oncology Management Service as the Specialist Therapy Radiographer in January 2018, and has close links with the 24/7 Hotline service and the patient admission and transfer suite (PAT Suite).

Alongside the network MSCC coordinator, Claire supports the triage of patients referred; she has particular focus on the internal radiotherapy patient pathway, ensuring patients are reviewed and managed efficiently.

Lauren Murphy (Acute Oncology Outreach Nurse Specialist)

Lauren graduated as a registered nurse from the University of Manchester in 2012. She worked on the Haematology transplant unit at the MRI before moving to The Christie Oncology Assessment Unit (OAU) as a staff nurse. She then gained experience as a lung cancer Clinical Nurse Specialist as part of a secondment before she returned to the OAU in December 2016 as a sister.

A move to Salford Royal Foundation Trust to take on the role of Acute Oncology Nurse Specialist in October 2017 gave Lauren excellent background experience in Acute Oncology and the spinal management of patients with MSCC to return to the Christie to the position of Hotline/MSCC lead. Lauren’s role is to integrate the MSCC service within the Hotline and will support both teams with the management of these complex patients.
