Our Executive Director of Nursing and Quality: Jackie Bird
Jackie was appointed as Executive Director of nursing and quality at The Christie in June 2011, joining from The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust where she was chief of quality and standards and chief nurse. Prior to this she was the deputy director of nursing and governance at Salford Royal NHS Foundation Trust. Jackie is responsible for the professional leadership of nursing and other health professionals, such as therapists. Her director role allows her to develop her long standing interest in cancer while addressing improvements in patient safety, patient experience and clinical outcomes. She conducts quality rounds and is a visible presence in the clinical areas. Jackie also carries the role for Caldicott Guardian, Safeguarding and the Director of Infection Prevention and Control.
Jackie was awarded a Florence Nightingale Leadership Scholarship in 2013 and has used her scholarship to develop and introduce a quality mark for patients undergoing chemotherapy. Jackie is the registered nurse governing body member on Calderdale Clinical Commissioning Group and is the elected Director of Nursing representative on Health Education (NW) Board. A registered nurse and a mental health trained nurse, she holds an honours degree in nursing studies and a Masters in management and leadership.
Deputy Director of Nursing and Quality
Jane Sykes provides professional line management and leadership to the matrons and senior clinical nurses. She manages corporate nursing within the Quality and Standards Division which includes safeguarding and quality improvement; and leads on patient experience initiatives in the trust.
Our matrons provide leadership to the nursing teams in their areas. Working clinically they are responsible for ensuring high standards of patient safety, patient experience, clinical effectiveness and quality improvement.
