Massage for cancer and supportive care

Saturday 27 July, 10:45am to 5:30pm and Sunday 28 July 2024, 9:30am to 4.30pm - classroom

Course tutors: Anita Mehrez and Sarah Wilkins

This 2-day course is designed for massage therapists who want to expand their skills in massage therapy, enabling them to work safely and effectively with people with cancer and/or other complex/life-threatening conditions.

We will explore safe and creative ways of adapting massage therapy whilst gaining an understanding of the rationale for adapted work for clients at all stages of a cancer journey, whether on active treatment, living beyond, or alongside supportive and end of life care.

As a teaching team, we are committed to providing a knowledge base that can be contextualised to suit a variety of different environments. We take a zero-strain approach to massage with touch based sessions that will allow you to build your confidence working with and without oil, through both practitioner and client experience.

Prerequisite: Level 3 Massage Therapy diploma or equivalent and 1 year’s therapeutic practice.

Location: The Education Centre, The Christie NHS Foundation Trust, Wilmslow Road, Withington M20 4XQ.

Please note: The Integrated Therapies Training Unit (ITTU) continuously strives to provide current, evidence-based educational events to equip integrative therapists and health care professionals with relevant skills and knowledge to apply in their roles. Although many of the courses discuss ways of adapting practice when providing therapies to patients with a cancer diagnosis, we maintain that the aims of our educational events are to increase understanding of cancer and the delivery of suitable complementary therapies for therapeutic purposes in this patient cohort. Therapies are to be offered alongside medical treatment as a means to enhance physical and psychological wellbeing, and never as a treatment for the underlying cancer.
