Around 75% of the Trust’s outpatient appointments take place in department 42 (main outpatients close to Wilmslow Road). The department is in need of considerable redevelopment to provide patients with a calm, relaxed and spacious environment. The set-up of the current outpatient department is not conducive to providing the experience that we wish for our patients.
A number of redevelopment projects will be taking place over the coming months in order to address these issues. The first phase of this redevelopment work is to undertake a re-location of the existing outpatient department to a new location (dept. 22), accessed via the main hospital corridor. This new area, Outpatients Department A (dept. 22) will provide an improved, spacious and calm environment.
In addition the first phase includes the relocation of some existing services based elsewhere in the Trust to ensure a better experience for patients, and a more accessible service. This includes the creation of a new centralised bloods room which will be positioned in the area currently occupied by the outpatient annexe (dept. 35). In order to begin work on developing this bloods room as soon as possible, the clinics that are currently take place in department 35 will be relocated to the new outpatient area from 5th November 2018. The remaining clinics will move over ready for the full department opening early 2019.
Additionally a patient flow system is being introduced to the hospital. This will allow patients to check themselves in for appointments upon arrival via check in kiosks which are being placed at the hospital entrances on Oak Road and Palatine Road. There will be staff members and volunteers on hand at all times to help patients check in and find their way around our new department. These kiosks will be operational when the full department opens in early 2019
Useful information for patients:
5th November: If you have an outpatient appointment in department 35 before this date, please report to the reception desk there as normal. All patients with appointments in department 35 from the 5th November onwards, need to attend the new outpatient department (dept. 22). The nearest entrance to this is the Palatine Road entrance and there will be signage in place and staff on hand to guide you there. You will also receive a letter containing this information.
Early 2019: All remaining outpatient clinics will move over to the new facility from department 42 and the self-check in kiosks will be operational. There will be no changes to date or time of your outpatient appointment.
Please continue to check back here for regular updates on these exciting new developments over the coming months.
