Patients rate The Christie highly in annual survey

The Christie has once again received excellent results in the annual national inpatient survey for 2016, published today (Wednesday 31st May 2017) by the Care Quality Commission, sustaining and building on last year’s success and our CQC comprehensive inspection rating of ‘Outstanding’. 

The survey shows how NHS trusts score against each other in 65 questions looking at different aspects of the inpatient experience including the hospital and ward, doctors and nurses, care and treatment, and operations and procedures. The Trust scored ‘better’ than most other trusts in all of the section scores. 

Trusts are rated as performing ‘about the same,’ ‘better’ or ‘worse’ compared to other trusts.

Out of 63 questions, The Christie scored ‘better’ than most other trusts in 50 and ‘about the same’ in 13. No question was ‘worse’ than most other trusts. The trust was not required to answer two questions relating to accident and emergency departments. 

The Trust took top marks in 2 questions – these were:

  • Patients being informed by staff about who to contact if they were worried about their condition or treatment after they had left hospital
  • Patients feeling they were treated with respect and dignity while they were in hospital

We are committed to putting our patients at the centre of everything we do and it’s reassuring to see that they are pleased with the standard of care and treatment they receive.

“We are always keen to gather feedback from our patients and endeavour to act upon their responses to ensure we maintain and continually improve our services to them.” 

When patients were asked to rate their overall experience, The Christie scored 8.8. The lowest score by any trust was 7.4 and the highest was 9.2. 

In total, 149 acute and specialist NHS trusts were surveyed, and responses were gathered from just over 77, 850 patients.

The Christie had a response rate of 55% compared with the national response rate of 44%. 

The Christie NHS Foundation Trust has been ranked ‘Outstanding’ by the health regulator the Care Quality Commission which referred to it as ‘exceptional’ and ‘a leader in its field’. It commended the Trust not only for its effectiveness and care, but highlighted its work in shaping the future of cancer care and noted the reach and influence of its clinical research projects.
