70 members of Christie staff will be taking part in this year’s Great Manchester Run to celebrate 70 years of the NHS.
The group has joined forces and will be running en-masse to raise money for The Christie charity to kick off a series of celebrations planned at The Christie to mark the milestone occasion.
Over the last 70 years, the NHS, with its founding principle of free, high quality healthcare for all, has transformed the health and wellbeing of the nation and has become the envy of the world. None of this wold be possible without the skill, dedication and compassion of NHS staff, as well as charities such as The Christie charity which supports the service.
The 70 for 70 team includes a whole range of staff including doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, support and admin and clerical staff. Many have chosen to enter simply to support the cause, and others decided to join in due to an even more personal connection.
The team is being led by Christie consultant, Dr Was Mansoor, who has taken part in the run numerous times. He said: “I was honoured to be asked to lead The Christie 70 for 70 team. The NHS is an institution we are all proud to be part of, and this is a wonderful milestone to celebrate. What better way than to come together and show the true team spirit with colleagues joining together to raise money to further improve services.”
Jason Simons, from Withington, is a trainee nurse practitioner in surgery, whose partner has also been treated at The Christie. He said: “I’m really proud to work at The Christie and I’m proud to be part of the 70 for 70 team. Many of my friends and family have been touched by cancer and this is my way of saying thank you. I hoped to raise a few hundred pounds and so far I’ve raised over £1600 so I’m delighted and looking forward to the day itself.”
Lou Stimson, head of fundraising for The Christie charity said: “We couldn’t allow the 70th anniversary of the NHS to pass without marking it in a special way so we appealed for our staff to don their running shoes and work together. It’s a real mix of serious runners and people who want to challenge themselves and it has been great to see the team come together. It will be quite a sight on May 20th to have our sea of blue t-shirts at the start line to kick off our celebrations.”
The Christie charity supports the work of The Christie NHS Foundation Trust through its fundraising activities, and delivers projects, equipment and improvements that are over and above what the NHS funds. The charity has more than 50,000 supporters who helped raise £15.2m last year.
The Christie is celebrating the NHS’s 70th birthday with a series of events including a special Big7Tea event on July 5th, a staff summer party, and a Trust Open Day on July 28th.
