Professor Catherin McBain and the rest of the neuro-oncology team are the winners of The Christie’s You Made a Difference Award for February 2025.
The following comments were made about Catherine and the team in the February nominations. Judges picked the team out as very deserving winners and said that the comments made about them showed how they represent The Christie values and behaviours.
“The neuro-oncology team primarily focuses on the treatment and supportive management of patients with primary brain tumours. As well as 4 consultants (Rovel, Karan, Gerben, and Catherine), the team also includes 3 specialist Allied Health Professionals (Sara, Julie, and Lindsay), 2 clinical nurse specialists (CNS) (Jen and Liz), 2 specialist radiographers (Amy and Charlotte), 1 cancer care coordinator (Sharon), and a Trainee Advanced Clinical Practitioner (tACP) (Lisa). The team’s work encompasses a range of treatments, including radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and best supportive care, offering a comprehensive service for this niche patient group.
“In addition to direct patient care, the team plays a crucial role in supporting the wider Greater Manchester cancer community by providing education and learning development. The team’s expertise is essential in meeting the specific and complex needs of patients with primary brain tumours, and they also work tirelessly to advance services, improve patient care, and support research initiatives in this area.
“This team goes far beyond just providing treatment—they offer a level of care, support, and compassion that is truly exceptional. Their dedication to each patient and relative is holistic, taking the time to listen, advise, and provide practical help, with no sense of pressure or rush. Whether it’s through their research efforts (such as running a designated research clinic and developing and leading in clinical trials), their service development (introducing the role of tACP, the nurse-led SACT clinic, and training to help community teams support patients in their homes), or their commitment to fundraising for brain tumour patients, they consistently show their unwavering passion and dedication to improving care.
“Moreover, they represent the team and trust at both national and international levels, continuously striving to improve outcomes for patients with primary brain tumours. Their devotion is evident to anyone who interacts with them—whether it's patients, colleagues, or the wider healthcare community. They genuinely want the best for their patients, and their passion shines through in everything they do.
“Aside from their tireless work and dedication to their patients, the team is also incredibly supportive and caring towards each other. They form a close-knit group that thrives on teamwork and camaraderie. Outside of work, they enjoy spending time together, often sharing meals and the occasional drink. This strong bond between team members helps foster a positive and productive platform for care.
“The team is also very active, with different members keeping active by cycling, going to the gym, sailing, climbing, riding horses, doing yoga, and running.”

“I am writing this letter of thanks to recognise Professor McBain, her amazing team as well as all the staff at The Christie. My journey at The Christie started in October/November 2023 following my surgery at Salford Royal hospital. I have nothing but positive words to say about my experience at The Christie. From the radiotherapy staff, the staff taking bloods as well as the staff and volunteers throughout the hospital. Everybody is kind, caring and have empathy at the heart of what they do. Without such support and care this journey would be so much more challenging.
“Professor McBain and her team are just amazing. I want to put on record my thanks and gratitude for all they do in caring for me and looking after me. Caring, empathy and honesty are at the heart of what they do, and I just wanted to highlight not only the amazing care they deliver but pass my thanks via the senior team at The Christie. Also, the work they do with Salford Royal and the coordination between the 2 teams and hospitals is exemplary.
