Oak Road Treatment Centre team

The following comments were made about the Oak Road Treatment Centre team in the September nominations. Judges picked them out as very deserving winners and said that the comments made about them showed how they represent The Christie principles and behaviours.

“The Oak Road Treatment Centre (ORTC) team are responsible for the delivery of SACT (systemic anti-cancer therapies). Many different parts of the treatment jigsaw all need to fit together long before a patient attends for their planned treatment on the day.
“The medical team, pharmacists, schedulers, receptionists, health care assistants, nurses and nurse leaders all need to work in harmony to plan, assess and deliver up to 150 treatments a day on the ORTC. As activity increases, we continue to explore and develop new ways of delivering treatment closer to home including The Christie at Home, The Christie at Macclesfield, Christie outreach and most recently our bloods closer to home service.
“It comes as no surprise to me that the ORTC team have been nominated for this fantastic award. I see first-hand everyday how hard everyone works to ensure that all of those pieces of the jigsaw fit together just to get the patient to the treatment chair and when challenges arise, they work dynamically and together as a team to overcome them. The staff are incredibly skilled and compassionate, and I am assured that no matter where our patients are being treated whether that be at our main site, one of our outreach sites or within the comfort of their own home, they receive care of the highest Christie standard.
“I am so, so proud of everyone; you really do go above and beyond for our patients and each other and that is incredibly admirable.
“They like meeting up for team drinks and dinner.”

Gemma Jones, modern matron

“I have been a patient at The Christie for the past 10 months. Starting with my operation on ward 10, the care and support was outstanding. I spent most of my time on Oak Road Treatment Centre having chemotherapy.
“From walking into the reception area, I was greeted with helpful, smiling staff. The blood room in department 1 are a credit to The Christie – professional, friendly, and good at their jobs. As for the treatment I received on the chemotherapy unit, it was second to none.
“The nurses are one of a kind, kind-hearted, professional, and very approachable, and I can’t speak highly enough of them all. One of the sisters (Sophie) even came in early every Thursday to give me my treatment – how’s that for dedication!
“I would also like to mention the hepatopancreatobiliary (HPB) team that I work with – they were very supportive and caring towards me. Last but not least, can I mention Professor Valle. I feel that Prof Valle has carried me through my journey. I would never be able to thank him enough – that’s why he is my knight in shining armour.”
