Caroline Owens, clinical nurse specialist
The following comments were made about Caroline in the nominations. Judges picked her out as a very deserving winner and said that the comments made about her showed how she represents The Christie principles and behaviours.
"Caroline works as a clinical nurse specialist within the plastic surgery team. This involves being a patient’s named key worker during their surgical journey, from their first visit to the plastic surgery team through to discharge. She supports hundreds of patients each year through their surgery in both preparation and recovery. She has been in this role since 2008 and states regularly how much she enjoys being there for her patients.
"Caroline is a well-respected member of the plastic surgery team. She is well loved by her other CNS colleagues, the consultant team, and her patients alike. She will always go above and beyond to ensure she advocates and cares for her patients.
"Outside of work, Caroline is a mum to her 2 children (Brooke and Ronnie) and her dog (Hunter) and spends her spare time on “mum duty”. She and her daughter enjoy going to the stables where they care for a pony during her spare time."
- Lorna Brown, matron/manager
"After receiving a melanoma diagnosis and undergoing I wider excision, I have received the most amazing care both during the procedure but also in the following five years of monitoring. Despite other challenges facing the health service, the care before and throughout the COVID-19 pandemic remained constant and a telephone appointment was as detailed as it could have been ensuring I was also following my own self checks of lymph nodes etc. I knew I would only have to make a call and I would receive the reassurance/guidance needed outside of any scheduled consultations.
"The amazing aftercare continued right up to the date of my discharge which although I have always considered myself as being one of the lucky ones where early diagnosis and treatment resulted in the best possible outcome, I cannot put into words just how amazing Caroline has been.
"My intention had always been to nominate Caroline in recognition of the treatment, support and care I received, which far exceeds focus on the clinical elements of care/after care, something not all clinician teams are able or willing to deliver. After losing so many family members to cancer it proves that early diagnosis and receiving the level of care offered by Caroline does make all the difference.
"Whilst my family and I continue to support work of The Christie in any way we can I would like to recognise Caroline; it is clear she has found her vocation and is not just delivering a role/job description. She goes above and beyond every day, not only rising to but overcoming the many challenges the COVID-19 pandemic has brought.
"Thank you Caroline - you will never know just how much you have touched my life and from my family and I, we thank you."
- Clare Coope, patient
