Radiology
Our radiology department undertakes over 40,000
examinations each year. The services we provide comprise general
radiology (using DR and CR), CT scanning, MR scanning, ultrasound,
interventional radiology and nuclear medicine including PET-CT.
Our nuclear medicine service performs a full range
of radioisotope tumour imaging using a dual head gamma camera,
SPET-CT and PET-CT. We also provide a PET-CT service for the whole
of Greater Manchester and Cheshire Cancer Network.
Our Pat Seed radiology department houses five scanners - two MR
scanners and three CT scanners (one of which is used for the
purpose of radiotherapy planning). We were one of the first
hospitals in the country to take delivery of a state-of-the-art
Siemens Avanto 1.5T MR scanner.
In 2007 our radiology department invested in two new ultrasound
scanners and a new interventional suite.
As a support service to the hospital's groundbreaking research,
the radiology department provides input to more than 150 active
clinical trials at any one time, across all the disease groups.
Our consultant radiologists provide support to the Christie
clinical teams through multi-disciplinary teams, with a named
consultant leading for each disease group. About 40
multi-disciplinary teams are scheduled each month. There is also a
lead radiologist for each specialty within radiology.
In March 2007 The Christie introduced a picture archiving and
communication system (PACS). This has enabled patient images to be
viewed instantly by doctors and health care professionals which has
made patient scanning and diagnosis much more efficient.
Electronic web-based system of requesting PET CT
We have introduced an electronic web-based system of
requesting PET CT. This has replaced the system of faxing request
forms. This has helped facilitate the request process by improving
speed of requesting, data collection and report availability.
The PET CT request system is for oncologists to request PET CT
scans, track request progress and view the results.
