Non-ionising radiation specialists provide scientific, technical, and training support to the majority of NHS Trusts throughout the north west and some independent healthcare establishments covering:

  • Laser and ILS safety
  • UV phototherapy and PDT support
  • RF

Service

This covers the following areas of expertise:

  • safety advice
  • equipment performance and calibration testing
  • hazard assessments
  • assistance with establishing quality assurance programmes

Research and development

The group is active in research and development in a number of non-ionising radiation topics and also provides support for clinical research projects utilising non-ionising radiation.

Teaching and training

  • Lecturing on Undergraduate and Postgraduate courses at Manchester University
  • Laser/ILS safety training
  • The Radiation Protection section is an IPEM-accredited training centre for Part 1 clinical scientists and technologists. Where applicable, non-ionising radiation specialists provide training in non-ionising radiation protection

Professional matters

  • Staff actively participate in a range of professional matters ranging from refereeing scientific papers to providing advice to national and international bodies
