Diagnostic Radiology

The Diagnostic Radiology group provides scientific, technical, and training support to the majority of clinical departments throughout the north west

Service

This covers the following areas of expertise:

  • assisting with equipment specification and selection
  • the radiological room design
  • critical examinations and acceptance testing
  • ongoing QA
  • calibration of QC equipment
  • patient and staff dosimetry
  • incident investigation
  • advice and assistance with research projects
  • staff training (see below for further details)
  • advice on compliance with ionising radiations regulations

For the following systems:

  • general radiography
  • direct digital and computed radiography systems (CR/DR)
  • interventional rooms
  • mobile systems
  • computed tomography
  • mammography
  • dental radiography
  • DEXA

Research & Development

The group is currently working on projects with external grants in breast image analysis and dental cone-beam CT evaluation.

Teaching & Training

The Diagnostic Radiology/Radiation Protection section is accredited by IPEM for Clinical Scientist and Clinical Technologist training.

The section also participates in a number of other educational activities, such as:

 Professional Matters

Staff actively participate in a range of professional matters ranging from refereeing scientific papers to providing advice to national and international bodies.

These positions include:

  • IPEM Training scheme examiner
  • IPEM Training Centre Accreditation Sub-Panel member
  • North West Clinical Sciences Forum member
  • RPA2000 Part I assessor

Special features

  • The group operates within BS EN ISO 9001:2000 quality system.
  • We are recognised by the HSE as a Radiation Protection Advisor body  and can provide all levels of advice in this field.
  • Training for Part I clinical scientists in diagnostic radiology.
  • The group produces advice sheets to assist with common questions. The complete documents are available to customers of NWMP.

CMPE Radiation Protection Advice Sheets

CMPE has produced a  standard form for reporting radiation incidents. Our customers are asked to use this to notify us of incidents.

The Health and Safety Executive have worked with the medical physics community and the X-ray equipment manufacturer's to produce a  standard form for handing over controlled areas during servicing or installation of new equipment.  If you need further advice on the use of the form, please ask your contact physicist.'
