For most the ultimate challenge is the Marathon des Sables. This gruelling event is a 6 day / 151 mile (243km) endurance race across the Sahara Desert in Morocco, normally taking place at the end of March / beginning of April. The popularity for this event sees registration taking place three years in advance - giving competitors plenty of chance to prepare for the mammoth challenge ahead.
