The sky’s the limit for The Christie
Press Release Posted 07 June 2012
The Christie is set to celebrate
its expertise and achievements over the last 120 years in the
Manchester Day Parade on 10th June.
A walking float of patients,
staff, volunteers, and the Manchester Show
Choir will celebrate The Christie's dedication to
innovative cancer research, treatment and education in the annual
parade.
Since 1892, The Christie has
been synonymous with treating people with cancer and has, since
then, instigated many world breakthroughs such as the 'Manchester
System' of radium treatment in the 1920's, the world's first trial
of Tamoxifen for breast cancer and the world's first
use of cultured bone marrow to treat leukaemia. Today, The Christie
continues its developments, including the Manchester Cancer
Research Centre (MCRC) and the recent go ahead for the Proton Beam
Therapy (PBT) centre, which will open in 2017, and treat young
patients and children with the world's most advanced form of
radiotherapy.
A whole host of patients - past and present - and
volunteers with strong connections to The Christie will be part of
the parade. One individual joining The Christie float is former
patient Dominic Richards from Altrincham. He said:
"I was successfully treated at The Christie for testicular
cancer. I'm still here because I acted promptly and although I have
to thank The Christie for the fantastic care that was given to me,
the real reason I'm alive today is because my cancer was diagnosed
and treated early. Everyone knows someone who died of cancer, I'm
living testament that you can live through it too."
Taking part for the third year in a row, Stephen Anderson
of The Christie charity said:
"The atmosphere on the day is truly heartwarming and we
can't wait to take to the streets again. We'll be there to
celebrate the amazing medical triumphs The Christie has managed to
lead across the world and also the individuals and their families
who have bravely faced their diagnosis. It's also an ideal way for
us to celebrate and thank those who continue to support
us."
The Manchester Show Choir will perform popular uplifting
songs for the crowd to sing along with. Keep a look out for
The Christie float this Sunday 10th June.
