Rochdale pensioner prepares for 1000 mile cycle challenge
Press Release Posted 31 August 2010
Geoff Williams
A man from Rochdale is preparing to cycle unassisted for 1000
miles to raise money for the leading cancer centre, The
Christie.
Geoff Williams, 72, of Lynnwood Drive, embarks on the overseas
challenge on the 17th September starting in Barcelona. He
plans to cycle 50 miles a day to arrive in Lisbon by the 12th
October.
The former chartered engineer said; "My late wife
Margaret was a patient at The Christie for over 20
years. During that time I witnessed its huge
commitment to cancer care, and the use of developing science that
is the hallmark of The Christie's work. It was thanks to that
expertise that we were able to share the happiness of
Margaret's extended life, before she sadly died in 2004.
"I hope that this ride will be recognised as an expression of my
thanks for the amazing work by which The Christie is continually
pushing back the boundaries of cancer treatment."
Geoff, who is also an ambassador for the African charity 'Send a
Cow' which promotes self-sufficiency through sustainable organic
farming, will be joined on the trip by his wife Cora who works as a
care assistant at Springhill Hospice.
Geoff added; "Cora is an extremely committed cyclist and a
veteran of very long rides world wide. Together we've cycled
across the Canadian Rockies and completed a 1,300 mile
charity ride from Singapore to Bangkok.
"I'm lucky enough at the age of 72 to enjoy cycling and to have
such an accomplished partner. Why not attempt extraordinary things
and raise money for such a good cause at the same time?
"We aim to use a northerly route, avoiding Madrid, so there'll
be lots of hill work. We won't have a back up truck or other
support either- everything we need will be carried on the
bikes.
"I would be so happy if people could show their
support by visiting

Sporting events officer at the Christie charity, Marco Giannini,
said; "Cycling 50 miles a day is a challenge anyway, but to do it
whilst carrying belongings makes it extra tough, so hats off to
Geoff and Cora for undertaking such an adventure. Every mile
they cycle will mean extra money for The Christie, and that money
really does make all the difference."
