World Cup winning goalkeeper Gordon Banks is teaming up with the
Christie charity to celebrate this year's 2010 World Cup in South
Africa.
Gordon Banks, who was part of England's victorious 1966 World
Cup team, will be guest speaker at a World Cup Winners dinner on
Thursday 1st July at Manchester City Football Club to raise money
for the Christie charity.
Gordon Banks OBE, the former Leicester and Stoke City
goalkeeper, was a member of the England national team that won the
1966 World Cup. He was an inaugural inductee to the English
Football Hall of Fame in 2002 and was named by Pelé as one of the
top 125 greatest living footballers in March 2004.
Gordon is donating a signed photograph of his famous save
against Pelé in 1970 for auction and will be talking about his
reminiscences of the World Cup on the night.
Gerald Deslandes, head of corporate fundraising at the Christie
charity, said; "As world cup fever grips the country we are
delighted that Gordon Banks, England's world cup winning
goalkeeper, is teaming up with our charity
"By July 1st, whether we are commiserating or celebrating
England's progress in this year's World Cup, this night is a once
in a lifetime opportunity to be in the company of a true
legend.
"All funds raised on the night for the Christie charity will
help pay for high-tech equipment, specialist staff, vital research
and extra services to support our cancer patients."
The event has been sponsored by Vinci UK, Balfour Beatty
Construction Northern Ltd and Interserve. The three companies have
been involved with the construction of The Christie's new £17
million radiotherapy centre in Oldham which opened to patients in
March, the new radiotherapy centre currently under construction at
Salford Royal and the new £35 million patient treatment centre on
The Christie's main site in south Manchester respectively.
